Discover Richmond: December 2016
Prepare to be inspired!
It’s our second annual RTD Person of the Year issue, in which we spotlight individuals who have made a mark in the Richmond region. Philanthropists, activists, artists, administrators – you’ll get to know the people behind the accomplishments that have shaped our community.
We at the RTD introduced the Person of the Year program in 2015, which was our 165th year of serving the community and our 40th year of publishing Discover Richmond. With the great reception the program received, we decided to keep a good thing going.
This year’s honorees are headlined by Richmond Mayor-elect Levar Stoney, whose surprise first-ballot victory reflected a generation shift in local politics. At only 35, Stoney represents the youth and vitality that increasingly mark the spirit of the capital city and the entire region.
We also recognize five Hall of Fame inductees for their lifetime contributions to the community. VCU’s Grace Harris, Chesterfield’s Jay Stegmaier, philanthropist Neil November, the Richmond Ballet’s Stoner Winslett and BB&T Scott and Stringfellow’s Buford Scott have each crafted remarkable legacies here.
And we highlight 20 other honorees for a range of accomplishments – from singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus and Olympic gold medalist Townley Haas, who each enjoyed breakout years as young adults, to Virginia War Memorial savior Jon Hatfield and others who, over time, have built or rebuilt parts of our region’s foundation.
Congratulation to all of our 2016 RTD Person of the Year honorees. Enjoy discovering their stories – and be inspired to create one of your own in 2017.
